PROJECT 9︎︎︎ This American Life: Fear of Sleep

  • Publication Design
  • Digital Publication
  • Book Binding

︎ This American Life is an American weekly hour-long radio program produced in collaboration with Chicago Public Media and hosted by Ira Glass. Each week's show has a theme, explored in several "acts." In a class devoted solely to publication design, I was assigned to pick an episode of This American Life from the archive to listen to, transcript, and then turn into two publications.

I picked an episode from 2008 called "Fear of Sleep" that interviewed several people who either have severe clinical issues with sleep and deeply fear it. I knew the subjects of sleep and fear would draw up a large library of visual inspiration, and I chose type and imagery that was frightening and distorted to give the feeling of being in a nightmare or not having not slept properly in a long time. We designed two publications with content from our chosen episode, one in the form of a digital publication and the other a physical, bound book.
